My Ubuntu & Windows XP experience…
Hey Everyone, About a week ago, my brother Chris and I spoke about adding Windows to our already setup Ubuntu 8.10 systems. Why in the world would we want to do that you ask… First off, we have lots of love for Ubuntu but it’s tough to find some software for certain things (at this point we were searching for Video Editing software and without much luck for Linux). I also thought it would be a nice little challenge for me since I’ve never setup a Dual Boot system before :) I’ll try to keep it short and sweet, I am doing this more for anyone who wants to try the same sort of setup. I first found a great article on how to accomplish this when Ubuntu is already installed, you can check it out here: http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_linux_and_windows_xp_linux_installed_first.htm This article gives a great explanation of how to get the process going. There was one issue we ran into though when trying to install the Windows XP on the laptop. It wasn’t being recognized by the Windows XP (legitimate copy :-) ) so I did some more research and found this great article on why it can’t be found and how to create your own custom Windows XP install disk: http://www.laptops-drivers.com/dell-laptop/how-to-install-windows-xp-on-dell-inspiron-1420-part-i.html This article was a great help and really explained how to use the tool nliteOS.com - which helps you create your own XP install disk. It all seems to work quite nicely together and even though I’m not a huge Windows fan it is nice to have it setup now with the option to use if we need it! Hope this might help someone that is looking to do the same. — Adrian
